Week of February 4, 2010

More marquis matchups last weekend produced a little musical chairs in the top ten rankings.  For starters, Miami-Ohio kept a tight grip on the #1 ranking after sweeping Western Michigan. Denver rose up from # 3 to # 2 by sweeping # 4 at the time North Dakota – the two losses pinned on the Sioux dropped them down five slots to # 9 in the rankings. Wisconsin dropped from # 3 to # 2 on their split with Minnesota-Duluth, which bumped the Bulldogs up from # 6 to # 9. St. Cloud State rose from # 5 to mighty # 4 on it’s split with Colorado College, which also moved the Tigers up from # 11 to # 10.  Cornell rose from # 8 to # 5 on two wins against St. Lawrence and Clarkson, while Bemidji State held at # 7 after splitting with Robert Morris.  And Yale dropped from # 6 to # 8 on a weekend of mixed results, dropping union, but getting slammed by RPI.  I also mentioned Boston’s Beanpot tournament last week – on Monday, Boston College crushed Harvard 6-0, and Boston University beat Northeastern 2-1.

This weekend we have no top ten matchups!  However, we do have some interesting pairings, starting with the battle of Colorado Springs, as the United States Air Force Academy will host # 11 Colorado College.  We’ll see how the other half of the Serratore Brothers manages with some heavy competition this weekend.  And if hosting # 11 is not enough, well, we’ll just throw in # 2 Denver the next night.  Good luck to our Air Force Academy Cadet Team.  Don’t know if you are aware – I just received this one – this past football season BYU hosted the Air Force Academy, and prior to the game played a short video as a tribute to Air Force, encouraging all  the fans to applaud the cadets as they walked onto the field.  Pretty nice sentiment.

See it here.

Also, a rather cool matchup this weekend sees Michigan travel to # 3 Wisconisn.  Lastly, the Beanpot final on Monday night will feature Boston College and Boston University.  This will be the fourth time this season the # 14 Boston College Eagles will face BU, and with a struggling BU holding the advantage 2-1 so far, and having beaten BC in front of 38,000 fans at Fenway Park, and a couple of weeks ago on BC’s home ice, one would imagine that BC has a great revenge motivation in this game.
