What a great day Thursday is in the world of sports. One of the best sporting events on the planet kicks off at 2pm Pacific Time when Rochester Institute of Technology takes on Wisconsin, followed at 5:30pm Pacific Time when Boston College faces Miami of Ohio. So if you are able to be near a TV at those times, I’d bet you will see some tremendous hockey — games are broadcast on ESPN2. One orange team, and three red teams (or, in the case of Boston College, sort of a brownish red thing). RIT has already beaten a team wearing a brownish red thing . . . .
So what’s going to happen? Will Cinderella’s slipper, which just slipped off of the foot of Butler, fit RIT? Will Miami of Ohio come out with conviction and prove that what seemed to be in their hands last year, seemed to be theirs for good reason?
Miami of Ohio has been a top ranked team for about six years now, amassing an unequaled number of wins. They have had some of those seasons ended at the hands of . . . . Boston College. Wisconsin won it all in 2006, beating . . . . Boston College. And Boston College, since then, returned to the finals the next year, losing to Michigan State, and yet again the next year, beating Notre Dame to win it all. In fact, in the last 13 seasons, who has actually been more dominant than BC? Nine Frozen Four appearances, six appearances in the final game, and two championships.
But people do make a darling of a long shot underdog, don’t they? Can you imagine what would have happened if that last shot Monday night had actually gone in? Might that glass slipper fit the foot of RIT?
