Many Upsets In Last Night’s Action

Union College junior forward Jeremy Welsh, of Bayfield, Ont., leads his team with twelve goals and has added four assists. He also leads in penalties with twelve, for thirty-five minutes in the box. His #10 Dutchmen travel to play #15 Denver tonght, and #6 Colorado College Saturday night.

Well ok, we had no games played last weekend; things got rolling again last night with top fifteen teams in eight games, and five ended in upsets.  Let’s start with the Great Lakes Invitational — #14 Michigan State took the early game over Michigan Tech 3-1, leading throughout.  In the late game, #3 Boston College fell behind #20 Michigan 2-0, but caught up 2-2.  Michigan went up 3-2, and added an empty netter to make it a 4-2 win, setting up the championship between #14 Michigan State and #20 Michigan, and #3 BC facing Michigan Tech in the consolation round, tonight.

Next, the Catamount Cup saw #11 Ferris State lose to RIT by a 3-0 margin in the early game, no recap needed here.  In the late game, #16 Lake Superior State fell behind 2-0 to Vermont, but then scored five unanswered goals before giving up one more to Vermont to take the game 5-3.  This suggests a championship game of Lake Superior and RIT, but it was already scheduled that way in advance, with Vermont facing Ferris State tonight.

In the UConn Classic, #17 UMass-Lowell pounded Rennselaer 7-2 in the early game, while UConn beat Army in the late game 2-0, setting up UMass-Lowell and UConn for the championship, and Army and RPI in the consolation tonight. Down south in the Florida Classic, Maine hammered #26 Clarkson 6-1 in the early game, and UMass-Amherst handled #13 Cornell 5-3 in the late game, setting up UMass and Maine in the championship, and #13 Cornell and #16 Clarkson in the consolation tonight.  And in the first of a two game weekend, St. Cloud State took down #8 Western Michigan 4-2.

And for the rest of the weekend, there is Saturday night’s match of #5 Notre Dame playing host to #9 Boston University at 4pm Pacific Time on Versus, and this appears to be a national telecast (the Lefse/Kringle match, as it seems to be known).  Also, #10 Union travels to play #15 Denver tonight, and then on to #6 Colorado College Saturday night.  While there are eight more individual games, and four more first round games in two tournaments, none feature top fifteen teams matched up, or the possibility of a top fifteen matchup in a championship.  The Mariucci Classic does feature #2 Minnesota, and the Ledyard Bank Tournament does feature #7 Merrimack.

This provides last week’s poll (no poll this week), rankings, last week’s records, and last week’s results (not updated):

That’s all for now.  Happy New Year to All, and go Terriers!
