Minn-Duluth Sweeps W. Michigan

Cornell junior forward Greg Miller, of Toronto, scored a goal in each game against Colorado College last weekend, helping his team to a 3-1 win and a 3-3 tie, and to rise up to #9 in the rankings.

Some great games last weekend!  #1 Minnesota-Duluth swept Western Michigan.  Friday night Western Michigan scored first in the first, and UMD came back with one in the second, but it was all UMD in the third with three goals to prevail 4-1.  Saturday night was almost the same game, with each team scoring one in the first, and one in the second, but UMD came on with three goals in the third to win it 5-2.  Travis Oleksuk and Joe Basaraba each scored a goal in each game for UMD.  #9 Cornell snagged a win and a tie at Colorado College.  Friday night Cornell got on top early with two in the first, and while CC netted one in the third, so did Cornell, to take it 3-1.  Satuday night it was CC scoring first and leading 2-0, but Cornell scored three unanswered goals before CC threw in an extra attacker late and tied it up at 3-3 with only half a minute remaining.  What?  More top twleve matchups?  #3 Notre Dame came home happy from Minnesota after a thriller that saw Notre Dame score first, Minnesota tie it, and then Notre Dame score three unanswered goals.  Minnesota cranked it up late, scoring twice within thirty seconds with about three minutes to go, but that was it as Notre Dame prevailed 4-3.

Still more top twelve matchups?  What a weekend!  #7 Merrimack had its hands full Friday night at Boston Univeristy, as Merrimack scored first, but then gave up three unanswered goals, all in the first.  In the second each team tallied a goal, and then stalemated in the third as BU won 4-2.  Sunday Merrimack played at Boston College, scoring first again, in the second period.  But BC scored twice in the second, and the game stalemated for two-thirds of the remaining second, and nearly all the third, until Merrimack put an extra attacker on the ice and scored with about a minute remaining to salvage a tie on the weekend, 2-2.  Elsewhere, #2 Ohio State found itself in a weekend-long dogfight with Bowling Green, coming out with two ties; and get a load of this — Bowling Green won the shootouts in both games.  #11 UMass-Lowell was idle, and #12 Colgate suffered two losses at the hands of #13 Ferris State.  Friday night Colgate had leads at 1-0 and 3-2, but Ferris State scored two late in the third to take it 4-3.  Saturday night it was really all Ferris State, 3-1.

This weekend there will be a great top twelve matchup as #3 Notre Dame hosts #10 Western Michigan for two games.  And two top twelve teams play ranked opponents as #2 Ohio State hosts #15 Michigan for two games, and #5 Minnesota travels to #17 North Dakota for two games.  With the Big Ten (which I think has twelve football teams?) starting hockey next year (and there will be six hockey teams in this so called Big Ten hockey conference) this will be the last time Minnesota and North Dakota will face each other as conference opponents, until such time as they end up in the same conference again, if ever, some number of years down the road . . . .

This provides the top twelve teams, rankings, records, and last weekend’s results:

That’s all for now.  Stay tuned, and go Terriers!
