Surrendering an early goal to the supposedly vaunted likes of North Dakota yesterday, Yale fell behind 1-0 when Corban Knight scored midway through the first period.  Yale played the next forty seven minutes as if their lives were at stake, outshooting North Dakota 25 to 16 in the first two periods, as North Dakota held Yale off, preserving their 1-0 lead.

In the third, with about eight minutes left, Josh Balch put Yale on the board, and in an instant it was a whole new game, tied at 1-1.  The question was, which team would show up and dominate the last seven minutes of the game?  Three minutes later, Jesse Root, who scored the winning overtime goal against another supposed WCHA powerhouse, Minnesota, on Friday, came through on a powerplay opportunity, scoring the go-ahead goal against North Dakota, to make it 2-1, Yale.  And three mnutes later, Stu Wilson added a goal to put Yale up 3-1, and with only a couple of minutes remaining.  North Dakota apparently took time away from reading their PR about how great they are, and put an extra attacker on the ice, but Kenny Agostino found the empty net for Yale with a minute remaining, to make the final 4-1.  Yale advances to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to face UMass-Lowell.

UMass-Lowell Prevails Over New Hampshire

In a tight defensive battle that looked like it could go either way, UMass Lowell prevailed over New Hampshire last yesterday with a stingy defense and netminder.  The two teams held each other off for nearly forty minutes, but Scott Wilson put Lowell on the scoreboard to go up 1-0 with only thirty seconds remaining in the second.  The tension continued in the third, and with about seven minutes remaining in the game, Adam Chapie scored to give Lowell the 2-0 advantage, and win.  Lowell’s Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 New Hampshire shots on the night.  UMass-Lowell advances to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh, to play Yale.

Games Today

Today St. Cloud State will play Miami of Ohio at 1:00pm Pacific Time to determine which team goes to the Frozen Four.  And Union College faces Quinnipiac at 3:30pm Pacific Time, also with a Frozen Four berth to be determined by the outcome.  Both games are on ESPNU, which can also be found on Direct TV, channel 208, and Dish Network, channel 148.

Our Pool

Well, how much water is left in our pool?  It, of course, depends on your picks.  It is hard to describe the level of upset of Yale beating North Dakota, in our pool, since not one person took Yale to win anything at all.  For this Frozen Four berth, Minnesota had been picked by the majority 24 out of 34, and North Dakota had been picked to get this far by a number as well.  As reg, ards UMass-Lowell, the majority, 19 of 34, had actually picked Wisconsin for this Frozen Four berth.  Lowell had been picked by 8, Denver by 4, and New Hampshire by 3.
