First Ever Pool Scoring Error

College Hockey Update:  I’m embarrassed to announce the first ever College Hockey Update Pool scoring error. This is how I caught it: Every year I get the totals after the first twelve games and I announce them. Then I double check everyone’s totals, from the beginning, after the semifinal games.  In all these years I have never found a discrepancy at that point.  This year I did.

Announcing the first ever College Hockey Update Pool scoring error.

This is how it happened: For the first time ever I entered everything into a spreadsheet instead of doing it all handwritten.  I did most of the counting by entering it in the spreadsheet and printing it out, and then doing the balance by hand on the printed sheet.  I did not count, by hand, a second round winner on each of five entries.

This is what changed, the impact: Five people had scores repored that were one point lower than they actually accomplished.  Threfore, five people now have point totals one point higher than originally reported:
  • BBettendorf, from 4 to 5
  • MBettendorf, from 4 to 5
  • NCruz, from 7 to 8 — this one is big
  • RCruz, from 5 to 6
  • Fairbrother, from 4 to 5
This has been updated on the table in the 3/31 posting entitled “Quinnipiac Spanks Union College.”
The accurate standings, therefore, after the first twelve games, are:
8   NCruz
7    McLean, Ramsey
6    Bogosian, RCruz, Kaycie, Reichel, Ryan, DShymanski, Speare
5    BBettendorf, MBetendorf, Fairbrother, Holte, Ide, Krajan, O’Connell, Pastor, Rarden, TShymanski, Smigielski, Sweeney
4    Allen, Cattermole, Huberty, O’Brien, Peterson, Slaughter, GSchreader, JSchreader, Wienbar
3    Kramer, Sell
2    OSchreader
Sorry about this mistake.  As you can imagine, putting one of the three leaders up one more point is a big change, and could have an impact in determining the winner of the pool.
That’s all for now.  Stay tuned, and go College Hockey!  Great game are being played by great teams everywhere.
