Union Crushes Vermont

Union College sophomore forward Max Novak, of Oak Ridge, NJ, scored two goals as #1 Union beat #14 Vermont 5-2 in the first game of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Union advanced to play tomorrow at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time, against the winner of this afternoon's game between #7 Quinnipiac and #10 Providence, on ESPN2.

The NCAA Tournament got underway in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at 11:00am Pacific Time today when #14 Vermont took on #1 Union College and Max Novak and Matt Hatch each scored two goals for Union College.  Union got on the board early with a short-handed goal, four minutes into the first.  Nine minutes later, Vermont tied it at one, but Union had a man advantage, and just a minute later scored to go up 2-1.  Vermont did a good job of holding Union off for the next twenty minutes — the last six of the first, and the first fourteen of the second, but Union scored again to make it 3-1.  Vermont again kept Union in check for the next seventeen minutes of play, and then Union got on the board again with nine minutes remaining in the third to make it 4-1.  Vermont came back two minutes later with a goal to make it 4-2, and then with three minutes to go, added an extra attacker, and just twenty seconds later, Union found the empty net to make it 5-2, which is how it ended.  Union pretty well had control of the game throughout this one.  Tomorrow, Saturday the 29th at 12:00 noon Pacific Time, Union will play the winner of this afternoon’s game between #7 Quinnipiac and #10 Providence, on ESPN2.
