BC Tangled Up In NU; North Dakota Now #1

Last weekend was another wild one, and there is lots of big news.  Let’s start with last week’s #1, Boston College; they played Northeastern three times last week:  they won 7-6 in OT to win the Beanpot; they tied 7-7 last Friday night, and Northeastern tried, tried again, and prevailed over BC 2-1 on Saturday, knocking BC down to #2.  North Dakota managed a tie and win against St. Cloud State, and moved up from #2 to #1, and Yale swept its weekend to hang on at #3.  Here’s some very big news:  Merrimack College took two from UMass-Amherst and jumped from #6 to ….. #4:  need I say this is the highest this program, six years in DI, has ever been ranked?  Well how about those crazy Dutchmen from Union College?  They beat both Clarkson and St. Lawrence to move up from #7 to #5:  need I say this is the highest this program has ever been ranked?  Did you catch that:  Yale #3, Merrimack #4, and Union #5???!!!

Union's Kelly Zajac, left-shooting Junior Center from Winnipeg was hot last weekend as he scored a goal against Clarkson last Friday, and two goals against St. Lawrence last Saturday, helping Union to earn two wins, and climb up to #5 in the rankings. Union and Merrimack have been on fire the last few weeks and both school have the highest rankings in their programs' histories — Merrimack is now #4.

Denver split with Michigan Tech and dropped from #4 to #6, while Minnesota-Duluth split with Mankato, dropping from #5 to #7.  Notre Dame took two from Ferris State, and rose from #9 to #8, and New Hampshire managed a win and a tie against Vermont, and droped from #8 to #9.  Michigan swept #17 Western Michigan, and the Wolverines climbed up from #11 to #10; Western Michigan held at #17.

After an idle weekend, Miami of Ohio finds itself demoted from #10 to #11, and Nebraska-Omaha split a weekend with Alaska-Anchorage, and moved up from #13 to #12.  Wisconsin split a weekend with Minnesota, and dropped from #12 to #13; the results put Minnesota back in the top 20 at #20.  RPI lost to St. Lawrence, and beat Clarkson, holding at #14, and Boston University swept Providence, and remained at #15.

Maine swept UMass-Lowell and rose from #19 to #16, and Dartmouth’s two losses dropped them from #16 to #18.  Colorado College settled on a tie and took a win from Bemidji State, and dropped from #18 to #19.

The season is really winding down!  Only one weekend left for Atlantic Hockey, the CCHA, and the ECAC, and only two weekends left for Hockey East and the WCHA.  Who is going to make it to the Frozen Four?  Have any ideas?  Let’s take a look at this weekend’s top twenty matchups:  #4 Merrimack will travel to play two at #16 Maine; #6 Denver will travel to play two at #12 Nebraska-Omaha; #7 Minnesota-Duluth will travel to play two at #19 Colorado College; and #8 Notre Dame has a home-and-home series with #17 Western Michigan.

This provides the top twenty teams, rankings, records, and last weekend’s results:
