Last I wrote, college hockey was going into a partial hibernation called Christmas vacation. Last week and weekend there were several tournaments, all of which I am sure were exciting to attend, however I’m not going to dissect them all and try to then recap them, I’m only going to report out the outcomes of games involving top ten ranked teams.
So, in big news terms (read that top ten matchups) #2 Denver beat #7 Boston College, #4 Wisconsin beat #6 Yale in a shootout after an overtime tie, and #3 Colorado College beat #9 Cornell. Now it’s on to the conference schedules in the next couple of months that will determine a whole lot about who is going to the NCAA tournament.
New to the top ten this week is Michigan State at #9.
There are no top ten matchups this weekend. There is a pretty good human interest game, however. You might be aware the NHL had its third winter classic game on new year’s day, featuring the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers, outdoors in Fenway Park in Boston (the previous two classic games were played at Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field). Well, they’ve left the rink in Fenway, and tonight Boston College faces Boston University, two programs going in two opposite directions. Last time the two met, BC handled BU easily. These two teams first played each other in February of 1918, and this will be the 248th time they have played each other. In February of 1920, they played the only outdoor contest to date, and BC shredded BU at BC’s rink, 9-0. About the only thing older than the rivalry is Fenway Park itself, opened in 1912, two years before the appearance of Red Sox pitching ace Babe Ruth, who built a 94-46 record there. The game tonight will be seen by nearly 40,000 college hockey fans on hand to see BU and BC faceoff at 7:30pm Eastern. Temperature expected to be 27, and 80% probability of snowfall at game time. If interested, this game will be on NESN and the NHL Network.
So here’s the top ten teams, rankings, records, and results since December 18:
