College Hockey Update: In opening round action of the NCAA Tournament in the Midwest Regional in Allentown, PA., Bowling Green came out and gave Minnesota-Duluth fits pretty much from start to finish. In another display of a team playing a careful, measured, defensively-focused game, Bowling Green was out-shot in every period, but held Duluth off for a scoreless first, and seventeen minutes of a scoreless second, when Bowling Green broke the scoring silence to take a 1-0 lead into the third period. In the third the pace of play continued on as it had all game long, until UMD seemed to hit a different gear with about five minutes left, as they picked up the pace and pressed hard on Bowling Green. About two minutes later it was senior forward Parker MacKay, of Irma, Alberta, who netted one to tie it up at one apiece, which is how it ended in regulation. In overtime UMD continued to press, and at the twelve minute mark it was Parker MacKay again, who scored to give UMD the 2-1 win. UMD advances to the Midwest Regional Final in Allentown, PA., tomorrow, Sunday, March 31st, and will face the winner of the Quinnipiac/Arizona State Game (currently underway, and Quinnipiac leads 2-0, with four minutes left in the second), at 4:30pm Pacific Time on ESPN3.
This game was not remotely an upset in our pool as it was the only game in which every single entry, 58 out of 58, were united in a pick — for UMD, and zero for Bowling Green.
That’s all for now. Stay tuned, and go Terriers!
