Friars Sweep Merrimack; UMD #1

Ohio State sophomore forward Chris Crane, of West Chester, OH., scored a goal in each game, including the game winner Saturday night, in his teams sweep of Lake Superior State, helping the Buckeyes to rise to #4 in the rankings.

Last weekend was a wild one, with Providence sweeping Merrimack, and knocking them down from #1 to #5 in the rankings, and introducing Providence to the top twenty at #20.  Merrimack also beat Vermont Wednesday night, after the poll came out.  In addition the weekend saw the continued surge of Minnesota-Duluth, as they swept Michigan Tech, elevating UMD from #4 to #1 in the rankings.  In other games heralded last week,  Boston College split with Boston University, each team winning in the other team’s house, knocking BC down from #2 to #3, and lifting BU from #13 to #11.  BC also beat Providence Tuesday night, and BU also beat New Hampshire last night, both games after the poll came out.

Last week’s #7 Ohio State swept last week’s #11 Lake Superior State, lifting Ohio State to #4, and dropping Lake Superior to #15 — Ohio State was just introduced to the top twenty a few weeks ago and is suddenly ranked #4.  Last week’s #8 Colorado College beat last week’s #10 Denver, lifting CC to #6, and dropping Denver to #13.  Last week’s #12 Western Michigan swept last week’s #6 Ferris State, and Western Michigan popped up to the #8 spot, while Ferris State slid down to #9.  And here’s a doozie — last week’s #2 Notre Dame was swept by Northeastern, at Notre Dame, getting crushed in the first game, and playing close in the second; Notre Dame dropped to #7 on the losses.

Last week’s #9 Union College settled on two ties with Quinnipiac and Princeton, and dropped down to the #10 spot.  Last week’s #15 Colgate swept a weekend against Clarkson and St. Lawrence, and Colgate popped up to the #12 ranking.  And last week’s #16 Michigan State swept Bowling Green, lifting the Spartans to #14.

Cornell earned a win against St. Lawrence and tie with Clarkson and moved up from #17 to #16, while Yale took a loss at the hands of Brown, dropping Yale from #14 to #17.  Yale also lost to UMass-Amherst Wednesday night, after the poll came out.  UMass-Lowell swept New Hampshire, and entered the top twenty at #18, as North Dakota swept Alaska-Anchorage and re-entered the top twenty at #19.

This weekend we have a few top twenty matchups, starting with #3 Boston Collge travelling to #18 UMass-Lowell for a game tonight — in about an hour.  Also, #7 Notre Dame and #9 Ferris State will have a home/home weekend, and #5 Merrimack will travel to #12 Colgate for a game Saturday night.

This provides the top twenty teams, rankings, records, and results from the last week:
